Mr K V Venkatachary was born on July 01, 1942 in
Tirunelveli. He obtained his Master of Engineering degree in Advanced
Electronics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1966. He joined
the Physical Research Laboratory, PRL, Ahmedabad in 1966 as an Engineer to work
in integration, testing and validation of scientific payloads for Sounding
Rockets.
Mr Venkatachary, moved to TERLS, Thiruvanathapuram, in 1968 and set up the test
and evaluation facilities for rocket borne electronics subsystems. In 1972, he
led a team that was responsible for establishing P-band telemetry station,
tracking Radars and radio communication systems to support sounding rockets.
Mr Venkatachary, as engineer in charge of ground systems at Sriharikota (SHAR),
established the ground systems for the first Indian satellite, Aryabhata and
later, established the ground-systems including telemetry and down range
stations for supporting SLV-3 and satellite missions like, Rohini, Bhaskara and
APPLE. As the first Director of ISTRAC, which was formed in 1984, Mr
Vekatachary was responsible in establishing state-of-the-art spacecraft control
center in Bangalore and TTC network stations in Bangalore, Lucknow, SHAR,
Thiruvananthapuram, Car Nicobar, Mauritius and Russia (Bears Lake).
Moving over to ISRO Headquarters as Director, Disaster Management Systems
(DMS), Mr Venkatachary configured the DMS and organized programme elements to
meet user requirements in the country. He represented India in the Regional
Working Group of the United Nations on Disaster Management.
Mr K V Venkatachary is presented the ASI Award for the year 1999 in recognition
of his significant contribution to Space Systems Management.
