Dr. Murthy secured Gold Medal both at graduate and post graduate level, the post graduation being in Optical Engineering from Andhra University Waltair, in 1967.  After a brief stint as research scholar, joined the then Space Science and Technology Centre of ISRO in 1969, and initiated the electro-optical activities.  Left to Adelaide University of Australia on study leave and completed Ph.D., in 1977.  Since then held several positions and currently working as Outstanding Scientist and Dy.Director, LEOS of
ISAC.

Dr. Murthy has done extensive research activities in areas of Thin Film, Optical technologies and electro-optical instrumentation and published number of papers in International Journals and some of his publications were adjudged as the best in the world literature.  He developed number of novel electro-optical systems, having application in diverse disciplines such as Agriculture, Geology and Defense, and Space Sciences.

Under Dr. Murthy's guidance, the optical technologies were brought to the International standards and various electro-optical systems for imaging of the earth resources and atmosphere of world class and to-day India stands as the best globally.

The entire electro-optical systems such as WIFS, AWIFS, LISS-III, LISS-IV, high resolution TES optics, Carto-2 A,B, VHRR, AVHRR etc., were successfully realized and flown on various satellites IRS-1C, 1D, P3 ,TES, INSAT-2E, 3A and planned to be flown on CARTO-2,A,B, INSAT-3Detc., with excellent on-board performance.  Also the sate of art of technology such as, Ion beam polishing, large area silicon carbide are firmly established for the next generation space borne optics.

Dr. Murthy received six times the NRDC, Govt. of India awards, WISTEX award, AFCCI, FICCI, IETE gold medal awards for the significant contribution in Optical, Thin Film and Instrumentation areas.

He is fellow Academy of Sciences and is deeply interested in science and philosophy.  He is keenly interested in spreading the Indian Science and Spirituality contribution to among younger generation.
