The Astronautical Society of India (ASI) hosted the ASI Awards Function 2025 on 12 August 2025 at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad. The ceremony was aligned with the birth-anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the architect of India's space programme, imparting additional significance as the nation's space aspirations were celebrated alongside the achievements of those who have advanced that vision through scientific, technological and leadership excellence.
ASI's award programme comprises thirteen distinct categories that acknowledge individual breakthroughs in science and technology, team-based innovations, contributions by young professionals, and lifetime service to astronautics. In addition, three Distinguished Fellowship awards recognise sustained, transformative impact on the Indian space ecosystem. Although each award has a specific focus, all share the common purpose of celebrating excellence and inspiring further accomplishment throughout the country's space community.
Nominations for the 2025 awards were received from a wide cross-section of organisations, including government agencies, research institutes, universities, industry, private-space firms and start-ups. This diversity reflected the breadth of talent that drives India's space endeavours. After careful evaluation, twelve individuals and one team were honoured for their outstanding contributions, representing a variety of institutions and underscoring the growing heterogeneity of the nation's space sector. The ceremony also highlighted ASI's commitment to nurturing the next generation of space professionals and to recognising the increasing contributions of women in the field.
The event was attended by an eminent assembly of dignitaries. Chief Guest Shri A. S. Kiran Kumar, Member of the Space Commission, former Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO, addressed the gathering. Guest of Honour Shri Kartikeya Sarabhai, Director of the Centre for Environment Education, Ahmedabad, also delivered remarks. Dr V. Narayanan, President of ASI, Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO, presided over the ceremony, which was further attended by Dr Anil Bhardwaj, Director of PRL; Dr B. K. Das, Vice-President of ASI and Director-General of DRDO; Dr Ritu Karidhal, Executive Secretary of ASI; Shri C. H. V. N. Rao, Director of the Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad; Shri Ganesh Pillai, Scientific Secretary of ISRO; and several former ISRO Directors, including Dr E. S. Padmakumar and Shri Rajarajan A. Family members of many awardees were also present, adding a warm and memorable dimension to the celebrations.
During the function, ASI leadership deliberated on measures to enhance the prestige, reach and appeal of the awards, seeking to strengthen their role in recognising meaningful contributions to astronautics. The discussions reaffirmed the Society's resolve to foster a culture of excellence, broaden participation beyond traditional boundaries and inspire future generations to advance Indian space science, technology and exploration.
The ASI Awards Function 2025 concluded with the Annual General Body Meeting 2026, during which the Society's governing council reviewed its achievements, set strategic priorities for the coming year and reiterated its dedication to supporting a vibrant, innovative and inclusive Indian space ecosystem.
